Dental Sedation

Dental Sedation is a technique that can be used when a patient suffers from dental anxiety or dental phobia. We are happy to offer a number of solutions for our patients to make their dental visit as comfortable as possible. Sedation dentistry techniques enable patients – who otherwise avoid the dentist – to receive dental treatment necessary for a healthy smile.

Depending on the extent of the anxiety or phobia, varying degrees of dental sedation can be utilized as described below.

NITROUS OXIDE SEDATION
Nitrous Oxide sedation, also known as "laughing gas" is commonly used to make treatment more comfortable. This sedation is inhaled through a mask that allows you to breathe in the medication and induces a state of relaxation. Local anesthetic will be administered in conjunction with nitrous oxide to eliminate pain.
ORAL CONSCIOUS SEDATION
This medication can be given to a patient the night before a dental procedure or 30 minutes to an hour prior to the dental appointment, depending on the severity of the anxiety. A nice feature about oral conscious sedation is that people typically relax to the point when they "don't care" about the dental procedure being performed. With Oral Conscious Sedation the patient is awake enough during the procedure that they can respond to verbal instructions. Oral sedatives do not provide total pain relief, so local anesthetic can also be administered if needed.
I.V. OR INTRAVENOUS SEDATION
I.V. sedation is available for certain dental procedures where the patient prefers to be "put to sleep." Dr. Stobbe works with a dental anesthesiologist who will come to the office and manage the I.V. sedation medication, while Dr. Stobbe performs the dental procedure. The dental anesthesiologist is a licensed dental specialist who has completed specific training in anesthesiology. This can be done for surgical procedures as well as longer restorative treatments when a patient wants to get a lot of work done at one time. There are many advantages to having another dental professional manage the anesthesia, so Dr. Stobbe can concentrate on the actual dental treatment.
